IVI Scientists Speak at 8th Typhoid Conference
From March 1-2, 2013, international and regional experts, researchers and government officials convened in Dhaka, Bangladesh for the 8th International Conference on Typhoid Fever and Other Invasive Salmonelloses. The meeting reviewed progress on the control and prevention of these diseases, including updates on the development/licensure of next generation vaccines. Scientists from IVI Dr. Florian Marks, Dr. R. Leon Ochiai, Dr. Sushant Sahastrabuddhe and Dr. Vittal Mogasale gave presentations on topics ranging from typhoid incidence in sub-Saharan Africa to the estimated global burden of typhoid, progress on a Vi-DT typhoid conjugate vaccine, and the cost-effectiveness of typhoid vaccination. Deputy Director General of Translational Research Dr. Tom Wierzba also gave closing remarks.
Conference attendees included researchers from icddr,b, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, and the U.S. CDC, as well as representatives from the WHO, Novartis Vaccines Institute for Global Health and the Bangladesh Pediatric Association (BPA). The conference was organized by the Coalition against Typhoid (CaT) Secretariat, alongside its partners icddr,b, the BPA and IVI, with financial support from provided by IVI and the CaT Secretariat at the Sabin Vaccine Institute.
