Austria Country Office
IVI opened its Austria Country Office in November 2022 with funding support from the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs of Austria (BMEIA) and the City of Vienna.
The establishment of the IVI Austria Country Office signifies the Austrian government’s commitment to enhancing Austria’s contribution to pandemic preparedness and to increasing contributions to global public health by the Austrian biotech and life science industries by working with IVI in developing vaccines for low- and middle-income countries.
The IVI Austria Country Office serves as IVI’s direct link to Austria and supports IVI’s Europe Regional Office with European outreach.
Background
In 2022, IVI and the government of Austria agreed to establish an IVI presence in Vienna.
The IVI accession bill was approved by the Austrian government in April 2024. Under this bill, the Health Ministry (BMSGPK) and the Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) each make annual core contributions of 400,000€ (totaling 800,000€) to IVI over a five-year period starting from 2024. Additionally, the Foreign Ministry (BMEIA) and the City of Vienna provide for IVI’s office rental.
In June 2024, Austria deposited an instrument of accession to the IVI Establishment Agreement with the United Nations, becoming IVI’s 27th State Party. On 12 August 2024, H.E. Wolfgang Angerholzer, Ambassador of Austria to the Republic of Korea, raised the Austrian flag at the IVI Headquarters in Seoul, marking the country’s official accession to IVI as a State Party.
