On the occasion of the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union
SUSTAINABLE VACCINE MANUFACTURING THROUGH END-TO-END VACCINE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN AFRICA
February 18, 2024 | Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The Government of the Republic of Kenya, International Vaccine Institute (IVI), and Africa CDC are co-organizing a key discussion on the sidelines of the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union to advocate for an integrated vaccine ecosystem in Africa executed through end-to-end vaccine research and development projects.
With Africa currently producing less than 1% of its vaccine needs, the imperative to invest in self-sufficient vaccine industries tailored to local needs is evident and urgently requires attention. One of the key enablers is to foster the vaccine ecosystem from capacity-building to access, delivery, and uptake, thereby accelerating relevant solutions for vaccine self-sufficiency in Africa.
“Sustainable vaccine manufacturing through end-to-end vaccine research and development projects in Africa” aims to illustrate the advantages and profits of end-to-end project-driven vaccine initiatives while emphasizing the need for a self-sufficient and sustainable vaccine ecosystem in Africa. Gathering government officials, public health experts, pharmaceutical industry leaders, and international partners, this event will highlight the gaps, challenges, and opportunities for building sustainable biomanufacturing capacity in Africa, for Africa.
The event will cover the current landscape of, and the roadmap toward, a holistic ecosystem for sustainable vaccine manufacturing with perspectives on vaccine research and development, regulatory affairs, capacity-building, infrastructure, delivery, access, market-shaping, financing, and technology transfer.
