On November 8, 2023, IVI and the National Vaccine Institute of Thailand (NVI) signed a Partnership Agreement, an extension of the Definitive Agreement from 2022 that outlines collaborative vaccine R&D activities and capacity-building programs, including the secondment of NVI staff members to IVI headquarters.

This year, IVI hosted Nattaya Anurutphan, a Vaccine Technical Officer at NVI, for a 3-month fellowship with IVI’s Global Affairs & Communications team. Here, we speak to Nattaya (NA) about her experiences, which ranged from participating in IVI’s annual International Vaccinology Course and helping to organize the team’s inaugural Global Council meeting.

What is your role at NVI?

NA: I’m a Vaccine Technical Officer under the Bureau of Vaccine Policy and Strategy, where my main responsibilities have included vaccine policy research and development to improve a set of national policies aligned with the current situation, organizational mission, and national strategic plan, as well as global health issues.

Is there a particular public health or policy issue that you are passionate about?

NA: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Thailand faced limitations in vaccine procurement. We were unable to acquire vaccines during the development phase or prior to receiving licensing. This prompted my interest in conducting policy research and making recommendations aimed at creating a novel mechanism or legislation for vaccine procurement during emergency situations, for the next pandemic preparedness. Another area of significant interest to me is the ASEAN vaccine security and self-reliance (AVSSR) initiative. By fostering cooperation within the region and establishing a strong vaccine ecosystem, ASEAN can enhance its preparedness to address public health emergencies and reduce dependence on external sources for vaccines. This approach will not only bolster the health security of ASEAN nations but also contribute to the overall resilience and well-being of the region’s population.

What was your most memorable experience during your fellowship at IVI?

NA: I had the opportunity to work closely with the Global Affairs and Communications team, which provided me with a wide range of experiences including managing IVI’s official Line account for Thailand, creating the World AMR Awareness Week campaign on IVI’s social media platforms, and participating in policy-related meetings. While there were so many memorable moments throughout my time at IVI, one experience that stands out is my involvement in the Global Council Inaugural Meeting. Attending this meeting allowed me to witness the collaborative efforts of IVI’s State Parties. It was inspiring to see experts come together and address global health challenges. Being a part of these meetings not only broadened my understanding of the field but also gave me valuable insights into the importance of international collaborations in advancing public health initiatives.

What are some future collaborations we can expect from IVI and NVI?

NA: IVI and NVI can collaborate on various fronts to enhance human resource development (HRD) in the field of vaccine research and development. With our recently signed partnership agreement, we have the opportunity to establish capacity-building programs such as training, workshops, forums, and fellowship programs. These initiatives will aim to enhance the knowledge and skills of vaccine researchers, clinicians, and public health personnel, while also expanding our vaccine network.
