Birkneh Tilahun Tadesse, M.D., Ph.D.

Birkneh Tadesse, M.D., Ph.D., is Associate Director General and Head of the Real-World Evidence department of the Epidemiology, Public Health, and Impact unit. In his role, he takes the lead in numerous multi-national, large-scale research and demonstration projects that focus on assessing vaccine effectiveness, as well as the impact and feasibility of vaccines in low- and middle-income countries.

Dr. Tadesse joined IVI in 2019 as a Research Scientist. During his tenure, he served as a project lead for early-stage clinical trials of the Vi-DT typhoid conjugate vaccine. In this capacity, he played a crucial role in overseeing and coordinating the trials. Additionally, Dr. Tadesse took on the responsibility of leading capacity-building activities at clinical trial sites that had limited resources. His efforts aimed to enhance the capabilities of these sites, enabling them to conduct high-quality clinical trials effectively.

Before joining IVI, Dr. Tadesse held positions at Hawassa University in Ethiopia. He served as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and held the position of Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. Additionally, he currently holds the position of an affiliated researcher at the Karolinska Institute, in the Department of Global Public Health.

Dr. Tadesse is a Medical Doctor and pediatrician by training. Additionally, he has earned a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences/epidemiology of infectious diseases.
