Gordon Dougan, professor in the Department of Medicine at Cambridge University and IVI Board Member, awarded the 2020 Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal
The Sabin Vaccine Institute (Sabin) awarded its highest scientific honor to Professor Gordon Dougan for his exceptional contributions to vaccine development, delivery, and advocacy. His proven dedication to vaccine and information accessibility has enabled the development of vaccines against diseases including typhoid and cholera, and advanced equity in global health.
Amy Finan, Sabin’s chief executive officer, said: “We are pleased to present the Gold Medal to Gordon. His work demonstrates a life-long commitment to innovating the development and delivery of vaccines, translating scientific research into practical tools and encouraging the next generation of leaders in vaccinology. His dual commitment to science and advocacy exemplifies Dr. Albert B. Sabin’s legacy in harnessing innovation for good and the belief that everyone, everywhere should have access to lifesaving vaccines.”
George Bickerstaff, Chairperson of IVI’s Board of Trustees, congratulated Dougan on his award: “Gordon’s receipt of the Sabin Gold Medal is an outstanding and highly deserved recognition of a true innovator in vaccinology. His contributions will continue to shape vaccine development and delivery, and we at IVI are incredibly fortunate to have his expertise in vaccine science and global health on our Board.”
Earlier this year, Dougan joined IVI’s Board of Trustees and IVI signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Cambridge’s Department of Medicine to promote and further academic links between the two institutions. We are currently collaborating on three distinct projects related to typhoid surveillance/vaccine evaluation, development of a vaccine against schistosomiasis, and accelerating a vaccine for invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella.
Unfortunately, due to restrictions posed by COVID-19, the Gold Medal and inaugural Sabin Rising Star awards will not be presented in person as planned, but recorded interviews with the recipients are available here, via Sabin.
