WHA76 Side Event | Empowering local biomanufacturing: How to equip countries for current and future infectious disease outbreaks
May 23, 2023
During the 76th World Health Assembly
About the side event
IVI and the Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Republic of Korea are organizing this side event during WHA76 alongside member states Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Sweden, and Thailand to foster better global cooperation mechanisms in pursuit of equitable access to vaccines and therapeutics.
Equitable access to safe, effective, and affordable vaccines, medicines, and other health products is a global priority as the world confronts an ongoing pandemic and prepares for future ones.
To achieve this goal, a growing coalition is joining forces to boost local pharmaceutical production capacity through impactful training programs across biomanufacturing, biosafety and GxP, technology transfers, and infrastructure as well as regulatory systems strengthening.
To ensure the effective utilization of resources and secure optimal outcomes for all, the international community needs a harmonized strategic approach and improved cooperation mechanisms for R&D and production. This requires both the development of sustainable local biomanufacturing capabilities and the sharing of experiences and best practices.
The Republic of Korea, Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Sweden, Thailand and the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) possess diverse experiences with context-specific challenges in infectious disease control that would be valuable to share with other countries looking to build local biomanufacturing capabilities and secure greater self-reliance.
This side event is open to all participants of the 76th World Health Assembly
Join us to discuss:
- Identified gaps and needs to build sustainable biomanufacturing capacity
- Challenges of local pharmaceutical production in LMICs
- Best practices in building sustainable biomanufacturing infrastructure and capacity in LMICs
- Opportunities and suggestions towards more effective international cooperation
