IVI Appoints Jee, Youngmee, Hanna Nohynek, and Lee, Kyu Hyung to its Board of Trustees
The International Vaccine Institute (IVI) today announced the appointments of Dr. Jee, Youngmee, Mr. Lee, Kyu Hyung, and Dr. Hanna Nohynek to its Board of Trustees. Dr. Jee’s appointment was effective as of April 5, 2016 while Mr. Lee and Dr. Nohynek will start their term on May 24, 2016.
“Dr. Jee and Dr. Nohynek are well-respected physicians and scientists from South Korea and Finland, while Mr. Lee is a distinguished veteran diplomat from South Korea,” said Dr. Jerome Kim, IVI Director General. “They bring leadership experience from their respective fields of virology, vaccinology, and foreign affairs, and I am pleased that they are joining IVI’s board.”
Dr. Jee, Youngmee is Director General of the Center for Pathology and Immunology at the National Institute of Health, Korea Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (KCDC). As a virologist, her career spans from serving as Director of the Division of Enteric and Hepatitis Viruses at the Center for Infectious Diseases at the KCDC National Institute of Health to Regional Coordinator of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), Division of Combating Communicable Disease Control at the Western Pacific Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WPRO). Dr. Jee serves on several scientific advisory groups such as the WHO Scientific Advisory Group for the Blueprint on Research and Development Preparedness and the Hepatitis B Expert Resource Panel and Strategic Technical Advisory Committee on Hepatitis in the WHO Western Pacific Region, and is head of KCDC’s Task Force Team for the Forum on Infectious Disease Research and Development. She will also serve as a member of WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on Immunization from April, 2017. She has an M.D. from Seoul National University, a diploma in medical microbiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and Ph.D. in virology from the University of London.
“Since South Korea is IVI’s host country, it is my pleasure to serve as a representative on the institute’s board,” said Dr. Jee, “I look forward to working with the IVI board and management to further strengthen ties between IVI and South Korea through vaccine research and public health initiatives.
Mr. Lee, Kyu Hyung is Advisor to the Samsung Economic Research Institute. A career diplomat for more than 35 years, Mr. Lee was the South Korean Ambassador to China, Bangladesh, and Russia. He served in increasingly senior positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that included Second Vice Minister and Spokesman for the ministry. He was granted two Orders of Service Merit by South Korea for his commitment to public service. Mr. Lee holds a Bachelor of Art degree in international relations from Seoul National University and was a fellow at Harvard’s (Weatherhead) Center for International Affairs (WCFIA) from 1992 to 1993.
“I am honored to serve on the board of IVI, South Korea’s first International Organization and the world’s only International Organization solely dedicated to vaccines for the developing world,” Mr. Lee said. “I look forward to working with the IVI board and management to continue to fulfill IVI’s mission.”
Dr. Hanna Nohynek is Chief Medical Officer, Team Leader of Vaccine Programme Development at National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) in Finland. She is the secretary of Finland’s National Advisory Board of Vaccines (KRAR) and a private practitioner of travel medicine. Dr. Nohynek’s extensive scientific career has included conducting vaccine clinical trials mainly in Asia, and studying vaccine safety, impact, policy and decision-making, and introduction; she has more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Nohynek has been a technical expert on committees (e.g.,WHO’s Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety) and advisor to agencies such as the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. She was the professor of international health and epidemiology at the University of Tampere, Finland. Dr. Nohynek has an M.D. and Ph.D in medicine from the University of Helsinki and was a travel medicine fellow at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
