LPGA Golf Star Soyeon Ryu Appointed Goodwill Ambassador
Golfer Ryu urges people ‘to support vaccine research and vaccination for world’s children

The International Vaccine Institute (IVI) and the Korea Support Committee for IVI (KSC) appointed professional golfer Ms. Soyeon Ryu as IVI Goodwill Ambassador. Ms. Ryu is known for her active support of philanthropic causes, and has made donations to YMCA’s promising young golfers’ club, and provided scholarships to her alma mater, Yonsei University.

The appointment ceremony took place on March 9 at IVI headquarters on the campus of Seoul National University (SNU), with KSC President Cho Dong-sung (emeritus professor of SNU), Prof. Cho Wan-kyoo, Executive Advisor to KSC, and Mr. Philip Driver, IVI Deputy Director General for Finance and Operations in attendance. IVI previously appointed actor Mr. Lee Beom-soo as Goodwill Ambassador in 2014, and Ms. Ryu has become the first sports star to be named IVI Goodwill Ambassador.

Ms. Ryu said, “It is a great privilege to have the opportunity to assist global efforts to develop and deliver vaccines for the world’s children through IVI, an international organization based in Korea.” She added, “I will do my best to promote IVI’s philanthropic work to Korea and around the world,” while urging people to extend warm support to the Institute.

“IVI is thrilled to have Ms. Soyeon Ryu joining us,” Mr. Philip Driver said. “Her support will go a long way in our push to accelerate the development and introduction of new vaccines for the world’s children who need them the most.”

KSC President Cho Dong-sung said, “As a reputable professional golfer, Ms. Soyeon Ryu has been already active in philanthropy,” adding, “With commitment and participation by Ms. Ryu, IVI’s efforts to develop vaccines to benefit humanity are expected to see a major boost in visibility in Korea and around the world.” Notably, KSC said it will stage an ‘OB Vaccine’ campaign in collaboration with Ms. Ryu.

‘OB Vaccine’ is a set of promotional gifts including pins and stickers designed to engage golfers with IVI as part of an advocacy and fundraising campaign for the Institute. Golfers can purchase these gifts through the KSC or participating golf courses, and use them to ‘prevent OBs’ (‘Out of Bound’) during golf games and help ‘prevent infectious diseases’ among children. The campaign allows people to enjoy golf and support IVI’s vaccine research and development at the same time.
