Dr. Georges Thiry Joins IVI
Effective January 8, 2013, IVI is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Georges Thiry as Deputy Director-General of the Institute's newly created Portfolio Management Unit. A Belgian National, he brings extensive experience in both project management and vaccine development in industry and non-profit organizations.
Dr. Thiry previously worked as Team Leader, Genetic Engineering, in Solvay Central laboratory (Brussels) and in the manufacturing facility of Solvay Animal Health (Minneapolis, USA) in discovery and development of veterinary vaccines. From 1996 to 2000, he was at GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals (Belgium) as Project Manager leading the development of human vaccine candidates against Rotavirus (became RotaRix), MenB, RSV, EBV, and influenza, as well as new adjuvants and delivering technologies. Until 2007, he was Director of Project Management, and of Process, Manufacturing and Quality Assurance at the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI, New York) where he set up a Project Management Unit and contributed to the development and evaluation of vaccine candidates against HIV in Uganda, Kenya, and India.
Most recently, Dr. Thiry was Director, Portfolio and Project Management at PATH where he implemented a Portfolio Management unit in Vaccine Development. He also served as Director of Advancing new Rotavirus vaccines (ARVAC) and led public private partnerships for the development of Rotavirus vaccines with manufacturers in India, China, Brazil and Indonesia/Australia.
Dr. Thiry obtained his Ph. D. in Science, Microbiology and Genetics in 1984 at the University of Liege, Belgium and became a Project Manager Professional from the Project Management Institute in 2006. As Deputy Director-General, Portfolio Management, he will spearhead the new unit that will include project management, business development, and grant management.
