IVI Announces New Chairman and Vice Chair of Board
On the heels of its 15th anniversary, the IVI has begun implementing major organizational changes to ensure continued success in both vaccine sciences and public health. At the board level, the Institute has appointed Dr. Adel A. F. Mahmoud as Chairman of IVI’s Board of Trustees and Dr. Viveka Persson as Vice Chairperson of the Board. Dr. Mahmoud succeeds Professor Ragnar Norrby of the Swedish Institute for Infections Disease Control, who served as the Chairman of the Board since 2006. IVI greatly appreciates his contributions to the Institute as Board Chairman and looks forward to working with Drs. Mahmoud and Persson to carry out the new institutional strategy.
Dr. Adel A. F. Mahmoud, Chairman of IVI’s Board of Trustees Dr. Mahmoud is Professor in Molecular Biology and Public Policy at Princeton University. He has recently retired as President of Merck Vaccines and member of Merck & Company, Inc’s Management Committee. His prior academic services at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals of Cleveland spanned 25 years concluding as Chairman of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief from 1987 to 1998. Dr. Mahmoud received his M.D. degree from the University of Cairo in 1963 and Ph.D from the University of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1971.
Dr. Viveka Persson, Vice Chairperson of IVI’s Board of Trustees Dr. Viveka Persson is a Senior Project Manager at the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education. Prior to this role, Dr. Persson worked at the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) for almost 10 years, where she served in various positions and functions including coordinator of Sida’s health research and head of the team handling international and Swedish research cooperation. Dr. Persson holds a PhD in Medical Sciences from Uppsala University in Sweden.
