IVI and the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp sign Memorandum of Understanding to advance vaccine research and development for global health and equitable access to vaccines
29 December 2025 — The International Vaccine Institute (IVI) and the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp formalized a collaborative partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding.
Both partners share a common goal of strengthening global health research through high-quality clinical research on infectious diseases, capacity-building, and the exchange of technical expertise and technologies. Together, IVI and the Institute of Tropical Medicine aim to pursue joint vaccine research and development projects as well as training and other knowledge-sharing activities while advocating for equitable access to vaccines. Previously, IVI and the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp were key collaborators of the Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine Introduction in Africa program, which generated critical evidence to support the introduction of the typhoid conjugate vaccine into routine immunization programs in typhoid-endemic countries in Africa.
Dr. Anh Wartel, Deputy Director General of IVI’s Europe Regional Office, said: “Our collaboration with the Institute of Tropical Medicine underscores IVI’s dedication to strengthening vaccine research through global scientific partnerships. By uniting our strengths in epidemiology, translational and clinical research, and capacity-building, we strive not only to accelerate the development of safe, effective, and affordable vaccines but also to champion equitable vaccine access. Our shared vision is a world in which every person, regardless of geography or economic circumstance, benefits from the protection that vaccines provide.”
Established in 1906, the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp (Belgium) strives to advance science and health for all through innovative research, advanced education, professional medical services, and capacity-sharing with partner institutions in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. They aim to reduce the impact of diseases and health issues on populations globally.
IVI is a not-for-profit international organization dedicated to advancing vaccine discovery, development, and delivery for global health, particularly for vulnerable communities. Through research, partnerships, and innovation, IVI enhances global health, strengthens pandemic preparedness, and ensures equitable access to life-saving vaccines worldwide.
