LG, the Korea-based industrial giant, and the IVI launched in June a special leadership training program for talented students to nurture future global leaders. The two organizations will jointly conduct the first ¡®LG-IVI Science Leadership Program,¡¯ which has selected 63 high school students from different parts of Korea and overseas.

The program aims to improve participants¡¯ ¡°science leadership¡± skills, which are talents essential for future global leaders, and encourage volunteer activities, by instilling them with a spirit of volunteerism through a series of lectures to be given by role models.

To this end, the LG-IVI SLP recruited 63 talented students through an English essay contest in June. The program will then require that selected students carry out volunteer activities in August in accordance with the plans outlined in their applications. Notably, the program will offer a weeklong training course in September featuring a series of lectures by successful role models to help the young students design their vision for the future and improve thinking and leadership skills. The faculty team will consist of leaders and celebrities in Korea and elsewhere, including IVI Director-General Dr. John Clemens, and ballerina Yena Kang of Universal Ballet.

special training program for high school students on July 17.

Following the course during September 1-6, the students will have a chance to put into practice lessons learned from the lectures during a second round of volunteering activities scheduled for October and November. Participants who complete the seven month-long program will be honored with a diploma awarded by the IVI in December.

IVI Director-General Dr. John Clemens said, ¡°I believe that the LG-IVI SLP will make great contributions in cultivating the next generation of global leaders by expanding knowledge and increasing the spirit of community service  among talented young students from Korea and elsewhere.¡± Ms. Joy Sohn, head of fundraising at the IVI and program coordinator for the IVI- LG SLP, stated, ¡°The program is not about teaching science subjects such as physics, biology and chemistry, but about boosting scientific leadership skills, which are needed for future leaders.¡±

The entire program will be conducted in English. Sponsored by LG Electronics and the IVI, the program is offered free of charge. In January, LG Electronics donated $400,000 to the IVI to conduct education programs and support the Institute¡¯s humanitarian efforts for the world¡¯s children.
