2006 vaccinology course scheduled for May 15-20
The International Vaccine Institute plans to hold its sixth annual vaccinology training course for experts to strengthen their capacity in vaccine science and technology at its headquarters in Seoul from May 15 to 20, 2006.

¡°The International Advanced Course on Vaccinology in Asia-Pacific Regions¡± is expected to bring together more than 80 experts as faculty and trainees from over 20 countries worldwide, including both developing and developed nations.

Participants will be selected by a scientific advisory committee. Fifteen fellowships granted by the course organizers will be available for participants from developing countries. The training course is guided by the scientific advisory committee, comprising the world¡¯s leading experts in vaccinology, including Prof. Ian D. Gust, of the University of Melbourne; Prof. Paul-Henri Lambert, of the Centre Medical Universitaire, University of Geneva; and Prof. Laura Rodrigues, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Disease. Faculty members include more than 20 vaccine experts from the IVI, including its Director-General Dr. John D. Clemens, officials from the World Health Organization and experts from industry.

The training program is designed specifically for scientists, public health officials and decision-makers involved in vaccine development and vaccination strategies at the national and international levels. Accordingly, the program aims to offer a comprehensive overview of the vaccine continuum -- from vaccine development to evaluation, regulation, production, and introduction. It covers the basics of epidemiology and immunology, and the latest vaccine technology and delivery systems, as well as vaccine economics, policy and ethical issues.

The course, hosted jointly by the IVI and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, is co-sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development, GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
