The IVI has begun this year¡¯s ¡®Science Leadership Program (SLP)¡¯ with the recruitment of 50 participants in July. The ¡°IVI SLP -- Love Green Class of 2009,¡± the second event of this annual program, aims to cultivate the next generation of global leaders by promoting environmental awareness and inspiring vision among talented high school students in Korea and other nations.

The IVI recruited 50 high school students from different countries to help improve their scientific leadership skills, which are considered essential for future global leaders. The program is designed to allow students to understand the global environmental crisis, which affects their daily lives and health, while instilling them with a spirit of volunteerism through completion of volunteer activities.

The program conducted a four-day Science Leadership Course in August, which consisted of a series of lectures given by successful role models designed to help young students realize the importance of the environment and to increase relevant scientific leadership skills and knowledge. The faculty included leaders and celebrities in Korea and elsewhere, such as Dr. Chung Kun-mo, former Minister of Science and Technology of Korea, and Dr. Chris Wainwright from the University of the Arts London.

The IVI SLP is offered free-of-charge, and thus the applicants and participants pay no course fees, though they do pay transportion costs. The entire program is conducted in English. The first event of the program in 2008 enrolled 63 students, and concluded successfully with a Best Awards Ceremony held in January this year.

This year¡¯s SLP is sponsored by LG Electronics, the Korean conglomerate, and supported by Korea¡¯s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the British Council, the Canadian Embassy, and the Seoul Tourism Organization.
