We are seeking a Research Scientist (Downstream Process Development) for a 2-year position at the International Vaccine Institute in Seoul, Korea to work within the Vaccine Process Development Unit.
Job Purpose

This job is responsible for leading Downstream Process Development of vaccine candidates and intermediates. This includes whole cell bacterial and viral vaccines, subunit vaccines and/or their intermediates (polysaccharides and recombinant proteins). Responsibilities include, assessment different expression systems, optimization, scale up, assay development (in process and release) and tech transfer to vaccine manufacturing partners. Responsibilities also include preparation/review of technical documents including development /tech transfer reports, batch records, SOPs, CMC regulatory submissions and writing scientific articles.

Key Accountabilities
1. Lead Downstream Process Development of vaccine candidates and intermediates
  • Develop scalable purification processes for whole cell vaccines (both bacterial and viral), recombinant proteins and polysaccharides with demonstrated consistency
  • Develop analytical assays to support in process testing and release of vaccine candidates
  • Ensure that developed processes are cGMP compatible and have high probability to be scaled up to manufacturing scale
  • Assist in development of high yielding antigen production systems for both bacteria and cell culture
2. Compile/Contribute to written documentation
  • Compile CMC information for inclusion in grant proposals
  • Devise or assist in the development of funding proposals
  • Prepare or contribute in writing technical documents including development /tech transfer reports, batch records, SOPs and CMC regulatory submission
  • Author external publications and internal technical documents, present results internally at project meetings and externally at scientific meetings
3. Develop and manage internal/external stakeholders
  • Supervise assigned staff in Vaccine Process Development Unit including setting objectives, performance management, and development
  • Participate/Lead project teams, interacts with peers within department and outside
Job Requirements and Qualifications
1. Education Requirements
  • Ph.D.: Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Microbiology or equivalent
2. Related Field Work Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of academic or industrial experience
3. Technical and Professional Skills / Knowledge
  • In depth understanding and hands on experience in downstream process development and scale up, separation techniques
  • Purification and characterization of proteins, glycoproteins and complex carbohydrates
  • In process and release assays development. Familiar with cGMP
  • Practical experience with upstream processing
  • Applies technical and functional knowledge to design and independently execute experiments/projects
  • Maintains quality of personal technical expertise
  • Makes major intellectual, technical/scientific contributions
4. Language Proficiency
  • Fluency in English, Korean is plus
