Everyone has the right to health and wellbeing. This includes the right to access medical services and vaccines, one of the most powerful public health tools available.
IVI is the world’s only nonprofit international organization with the exclusive mandate to discover, develop, and deliver safe, effective and affordable vaccines for global public health.
Join us in helping fulfill our goal of making vaccines a reality for low- and middle-income countries where vaccines are greatly needed. Almost 6 million children under the age of five died in 2015 – the majority of deaths are in sub-Saharan Africa and most are vaccine-preventable. Despite the achievements the world has made in reducing under-five deaths through the UN Millennium Development Goals, young children in the developing world still face death and disability from infectious diseases.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease that can kill within hours if untreated. The disease is usually found and spread in places with inadequate water treatment, poor sanitation, and inadequate hygiene. It is a disease of poverty and often strikes in refugee camps where overcrowding and poor living conditions are the perfect triggers for an outbreak. The WHO estimates there are 1.4 to 4.3 million cases and up to 142 000 deaths worldwide per year.
In response to this public health need, IVI reformulated and developed two oral cholera vaccines, specifically for developing countries in mind. The vaccines were approved by the WHO for global use, and are being used to combat cholera in countries such Haiti, Guinea, South Sudan, Malawi, and Iraq. More than 4 million doses of the vaccine have been administered globally so far.
IVI is one of the few nonprofit organizations in the world that successfully developed two vaccines for WHO prequalification.
What Your Support Means
Vaccine research and development can be expensive, costing millions of dollars, and taking up to 20 years before the successful technology is brought to market. As a nonprofit organization, IVI relies on grants and donations for its research and operations.
A donation to IVI can help us in various ways:
- Support our research to discover and develop new vaccines against neglected and emerging infectious diseases.
- Support projects to introduce vaccines into communities where they are needed most.
- Support training and technical assistance for our developing country partners in order to build vaccine capacity, self-sufficiency and sustainability in low- and middle-income countries.
IVI is a registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States and donations are tax-deductible for U.S. citizens.
IVI is also listed as a multilateral institution under the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Development Assistance Committee (DAC). Contributions to IVI may be reported as Official Development Assistance (ODA) either in whole or in part.
