Director General’s Message
IVI Director General Dr. Jerome Kim at the launch of a cholera vaccination campaign in Oromia Region, Ethiopia in February, 2015. The campaign, coordinated by IVI and local health officials, immunized more than 40,000 people.
Welcome to the IVI website. As IVI’s third Director General, I’m honored to lead this institute – an institute dedicated to vaccines and vaccination for global health for almost 20 years.
IVI is a unique organization with a unique history. It was initiated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and is hosted by the Republic of Korea, the first international organization in Korea. It is the only international organization in the world with the exclusive mandate to discover, develop, and deliver vaccines for developing countries.
Since its inception, IVI has made several contributions to global health. It led an international public-private partnership to develop the world’s first low-cost oral cholera vaccine, which was WHO-prequalified. To date, we are only one of two nonprofit organizations to accomplish this feat. The vaccine is stockpiled by the World Health Organization and is being used to fight epidemic and endemic cholera around the world.
This product development partnership model is being used to develop new vaccines against typhoid and MERS-CoV. We are also the lead coordinating agency of the Global Dengue and Aedes-transmitted Diseases Consortium (GDAC), a global alliance to integrate approaches to fight dengue and other Aedes-transmitted diseases such as Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever.
This only touches the tip of the iceberg of IVI’s work. I encourage you to go through the site to learn more about IVI. I hope you find our website useful in understanding IVI, our work, and our impact in the world by making vaccines and vaccination available and accessible for the most impoverished.
Jerome H. Kim, MD
